Here's my Reflection 2, would you mind posting it to the class blog please?
Open-ended learning opportunity: A big pile of different sized sticks and logs
Engagement categories: possible science practices
- sort by size: making observations, asking questions
- building project: making observations, planning and carrying out investigations, constructing explanations and designing solutions
- stick battles: asking questions, planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing and interpreting data
- carving projects: asking questions, developing and using models, planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing and interpreting data, constructing explanations
- collecting favorites: asking questions
- looking for insects: asking questions, planning and carrying out investigations, constructing explanations
- admiring wood grain pattern: asking questions, constructing explanations
I observed a group of kids engaging with a large pile of sticks and logs. For the most part, the overarching engagement category was deconstructing, redesigning, and rebuilding a giant fort. Some kids were deconstructing by moving sticks with their hands, some kids were throwing large rocks at the big pieces to break them and make them easier to carry, some were hitting sticks with other sticks. Some were "supervising" the build and making a plan to coordinate the group efforts. As a group, they were making observations, testing ideas, and constructing explanations.
